Exeter subjects amongst the very best worldwide

New ranking puts Exeter subjects amongst the very best worldwide

Both science and humanities subjects at the University of Exeter have been recognised as being amongst the very best in the world, in the latest influential global league table.

Thirteen subjects are now positioned in the world’s top 100 – with eight in the top 50 - according to the latest QS World University Subject Rankings, published on Wednesday 28 February, 2018.

Building on the success of previous years, Geography has strengthened its position, rising from 15th to 11th, while both Mining Engineering (16th) and Sports-related subjects (13th) move into the top 20.

Elsewhere Psychology (32nd), Hospitality (34th), Theology and Religion (41st), Classics (44th) and Environmental Sciences (47th), all feature in the elite Top 50 grouping.

Other notable entries include Archaeology, History, Performing Arts, English, and Politics & International Studies, which all feature within the global Top 100. With Social Sciences also ranked in the top 150, Exeter now features amongst the world's elite institutions in 30 of the 48 subjects.

Exeter also has at least one top 100 subject in each of the ‘Subject Areas’ that map onto  the majority of its Colleges  - Life and Environmental Sciences; Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences; the Business School; Humanities; and Social Sciences and International Studies.

Professor Tim Quine, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education), said: “We are extremely pleased with the latest rankings, which is a testament to the outstanding teaching, world-leading research, and hard-work and dedication by staff and students alike. The strong showing across all our Colleges is a true reflection of the extensive networks and industrial collaborations researchers take part in across the world, and subsequently how these are used to inspire our graduates at the very start of their future careers."

Professor Dan Charman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean in the College of Life and Environmental Sciences, said: “It is extremely encouraging and heartening to see that so many subjects from the College have been recognised as being amongst the very best in the world. It’s a wonderful achievement for both Geography and Sport to climb to just outside the top 10, and for Psychology and Environmental Sciences to be in the top 50. The results as a whole a testament to the hard work, dedication and talent demonstrated by everyone within the College.”

Professor Ken Evans, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean in the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, said: “It is wonderful to see Mining Engineering perform so strongly in this latest rankings. As well as demonstrating the commitment and excellence of our superb staff and students, it also pays testament to the world-leading research and collaborations that are taking place not only in the College, but across the University as a whole.”

To compile the rankings, QS analysed more than 22 million papers, producing almost two million citations. In total, 1,130 institutions were ranked across the 48 subjects and five subject areas.
