A leading Exeter academic has been appointed as Honorary Professor at Tianjin University in China.

Professor Timothy Quine, Professor of Earth Surface Sciences and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Exeter, was appointed alongside six other leading scientists at a ceremony on 27 March 2018.

They were all nominated by the Institute of Surface-Earth System Science (ISESS).

The appointments are intended to strengthen cooperation with world-class scholars and research institutions to jointly promote the advancement of geoscience.

“I am honoured to have been appointed as an Honorary Professor at Tianjin University alongside colleagues from other world-leading universities across the world,” said Professor Quine.

“Tianjin’s Institute is bringing together world-class scholars and research institutions to jointly promote the advancement of geoscience and I am proud to play a small part in supporting these endeavours.”

The invitation came from Prof Congqiang Liu, former Vice-President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, who has developed the vision for the Institute. It aims to establish an advanced theoretical framework of the surface-Earth system science through observations, experiments and modeling, and to provide knowledge for sustainable social-natural systems through fundamental, forward-looking, and strategic research on global and regional environmental change.

The other academics honoured are professors William (Bill) Dietrich (UC Berkeley), Jérôme Gaillardet (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris), Kimitaka Kawamura (Chubu University), Philippe Van Capellen (University of Waterloo), Harry Vereecken (University of Bonn) and Steven Banwart (University of Leeds).

Tianjin University Vice President Hu Wenping awarded certificates to the professors and offered them his sincere welcome to the University community.

He also expressed the hope that the appointments would facilitate increased international collaboration in the future.
