Beach debris to be transformed into art as part of Falmouth Spring Festival

Families can make art from litter found in the sea and on beaches as part of a free event at Falmouth Art Gallery.

The University of Exeter-run drop-in workshop, held on Saturday 8 April as part of Falmouth’s Spring Festival, will allow the community to make a mobile art installation using flotsam and jetsam. This debris will be collected as part of beach spring cleaning on 31 March and 1 April.

Local artist Tony Johns will help participants during the fun session, designed to also highlight the types of litter found in our seas and on Falmouth’s beaches.

Professor Dave Hosken of the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus, main sponsors of the Spring Festival, said: “The aim of our family-friendly event is to raise awareness of this modern day problem, which not only makes our beaches unsightly, but more importantly, is having a catastrophic effect on marine wildlife. Thank you to all the amazing Spring Festival volunteers cleaning beaches around our coastline.”

Donna Williams of Falmouth Art Gallery, said: “We hope that lots of families will come and help us to transform the cleaned beach debris into an artwork that can raise awareness of this global environmental issue.”

For information about this workshop, which runs between 11am and 3pm, please contact Donna Williams on 01326 313863 or info@falmouthartgallery.com
