Exeter academic wins teaching award

A University of Exeter academic has won a prestigious teaching award from the Higher Education Academy (HEA).

Dr Sarah Dyer, Senior Lecturer in Human Geography, has been made a National Teaching Fellow on a list published today.

The 55 successful nominees were put forward by their institutions, and submissions had to show evidence of three criteria: individual excellence, raising the profile of excellence and developing excellence.

Dr Dyer said: “It is fantastic to have my work recognised in this way.

“I have been supported by great colleagues and wonderful administrative staff.

“Meaningful education is sometimes challenging, I am lucky to have students who rise to the challenge.

“I will use the award to continue to raise the profile of education and to strengthen the synergies between research and education.”

Since joining Exeter’s geography department in 2011, Dr Dyer has championed inquiry-led teaching and collaborative learning.

Professor Stephanie Marshall, HEA Chief Executive, said: “Celebrating great teaching, whether by teams or individuals, is really important and highlights just some of the great work in the sector to improve the student experience.

“All the awards provide compelling case studies of best practice which we can share around the sector.

“It’s also an opportunity for all of us to reflect on our own work, individually and as teams – what are we getting right, what can we learn, what could we do better?”
