Sport and Health Sciences Networking Evening, November 2017

On Thursday 23rd November, Sport and Health Science held a speed networking evening in X-Keys, St Luke’s. The event was attended by over 20 Sport and Health Sciences alumni and professionals, and 130 students.

Grouped according to industry, alumni spent 10 minutes speaking to rotating groups of students. Discussion topics included career paths since graduation, working in industry, and how students can follow in their footsteps.

The speed networking was followed by a more informal, traditional style networking session. This allowed students to follow up on earlier conversations, and really engage with the speakers that had caught their interest. With students keen to utilise the strong industry presence, conversations quickly turned to application tips, work experience, and even graduate employment.

One of the employability lead academics for Sport and Health Science, Lee Wylie, said “We were thrilled with how the event went. It was excellent to see so many current students engaging in conversations with graduates about their potential career path. Events like this really open our students’ minds to the wide range of careers available to them.”

This new style of event was developed in response to feedback that students wanted to speak to alumni from a wider range of careers, and also have the chance to informally engage with them. Students who attended the event said they found it useful to hear from all the alumni initially, as it prompted them to consider careers and industries they otherwise wouldn’t have contemplated.

We would like to thank the alumni and professionals for volunteering their time to come along to the event, and all the staff members and academics who played a part in the hugely successful, and enjoyable evening.
